Sans Culotte (Josh Fradin)

Sans Culotte (Josh Fradin)

Opinion sent in from local Parisian urban worker:

What happened is very disturbing and should not have happened. Who would do this? This probably has occurred because the Monarchy is getting out of hand and people have been killed. A monarchy allows the wealthy and the estates above us to be favored. And since the top estates are favored they don’t have to pay taxes and only the third estate does which is everybody else besides the Clergy and Nobles. Even though France has a big debt right now the first and second estates refuse to pay taxes. Since this massacre happened the taxes might go up to pay for the damage to the prison. The national assembly should not allow the top estates to have much greater wealth and property than the rest of us. They should make laws to prevent this. They should tax all the estates and stop borrowing money from other countries because that just adds to the debt. A nation of small shops and farms would make everyone equal. They should make the Government a republic so all the common people can be heard and everyone has a say. No more of this monarchy or we incidences like this will happen all the time and the debt will just grow.

  1. Alec Gannon (Marie Antoinette)- It is ironic to say "the Monarchy is getting out of hand" while thousands of prisoners and nobles are violently killed before your eyes. The Monarchy is completely capable of solving these economic problems, but the violence of these revolutionaries will bring no resolution. The current government is sustainable, but the republic you wish to implement will ruin this country.

  3. Sans-culotte (Grace Mahoney)- I totally agree with what you said about how the government should be a republic and how the third estate used to have no power, but all that has changed now-- because of the September Massacres! The September Massacres were the first radical step towards giving the common people power. It took the revolution the next step further, and even though some innocent lives were lost, most people only got what was coming to them.

How can you argue with tradition? Monarchy is the structure of our country. Now you see what happens without it. Innocent people slain, no order, no sanity. A monarchy is all these peasants have ever known--all anybody in this country has ever known for that matter. Disrupting it only leads to shock and turmoil.
